The Right Fit: Slanj Talks Vanity Sizing

Ever gone to shop with a brand for the first time and tried on a pair of their trousers in your typical size and they won’t fasten? Or perhaps you’ve taken your own measurements and can’t understand why all of your best-fitting jeans have a 34” label but the measuring tape is showing that your waist is in fact inches bigger? If the answer is yes, you are most likely experiencing a phenomenon called ‘Vanity Sizing’.

So, what is Vanity Sizing exactly?

Vanity Sizing, also known as Size Inflation, comes down to consumer psychology. It is argued that Vanity Sizing is designed to satisfy wearers' wishes to appear thin and feel better about themselves and, in turn, the wearer will feel great in their clothes and buy more, hopefully returning to the same brand to purchase again and again. This means that many brands are being accused of incorrectly labeling the size of their clothing to appear smaller than what they actually are in order to encourage sales. Although this is most common in womenswear, it happens in men’s apparel too. Often, that 34” inch pair of trousers you bought are closer in size to 36” or bigger. That’s why it’s important that when you order with us here at Slanj, that your measurements are based on your actual size and not by the label on your best fitting pair of jeans.

If you don’t pop into one of our stores to get measured-up, we will ask our customers to self-measure so that we can ensure your made-to-order Kilts, Trews, Suits & Waistcoats are the perfect fit for your body. And as much as we want you to look and feel good in our ready-made apparel, which you will - everything we make is true to size, so give yourself a measure at home or let one of our sales assistants measure you in store before you buy to achieve the perfect fit.
